How does mediation work?
Participants meet voluntarily to resolve problems with the aid of a neutral, unbiased mediator. The mediator helps parties present their own viewpoints and understand each other’s, and create options for resolution. The mediator makes no judgments, suggestions, or decisions.
How much time will it take?
A mediation may be completed in one meeting of about three hours or it may require several sessions. The time needed depends on several factors including the complexity of the issues and the number of parties involved.
How are agreements implemented?
Participants develop a plan that will satisfy all parties. The plan on which they agree includes consequences of any failure to comply. Since all participants consent to the outcomes, they typically follow through and implement the solution.
What if we never agree on anything?
Mediation is entered into voluntarily, so the parties seldom refuse to resolve the issues completely. In case no agreement is reached, the parties can be referred to other sources of dispute resolution.
How do I get started?
We can meet with you for a 30-minute complimentary discussion to explore the appropriateness of mediation for your situation. We assess the situation independently with each party to the dispute prior to meeting with all parties at the mediation session. We may schedule follow-up mediation sessions.
